The Best Toddler Mattresses That Make For a Cozier Crib Transition

Best Toddler Mattresses

Quick Summary

The best toddler mattress is the Newton Baby Original Crib Mattress, according to parents in the What to Expect community, because of its high-quality materials, long-lasting design and ease of care.

After your child turns 1, so much changes: They’ll soon start walking, talking, playing and, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), they may be ready for a toddler bed which, in turn, means you may want to buy a toddler mattress.

The main difference between a toddler mattress and a crib mattress is the firmness. The AAP recommends babies sleep on a firm, flat surface until they’re 1 years old, but after that they can sleep on something softer, if they prefer. (It’s also worth noting you don’t have to transfer your child to a toddler bed the minute they blow out their first birthday candle — for many kids, 12 months old is still too young for the freedom a toddler bed offers.) If your child is sleeping well, there’s no rush to move them out of their crib; the AAP says you only have to move them when they start trying to climb out of the crib. But it never hurts to start looking and buying earlier than that, especially if you see a good deal on a toddler mattress.

If you’ve ever bought a mattress for yourself, you know the process can be quite difficult, because the differences in mattresses can be so subtle. As an added challenge, your child might not be able to express their firmness preferences or whether they find the mattress comfortable.

To make shopping for a toddler mattress a little easier, we’ve rounded up some expert feedback on what to look for in a toddler mattress and some parent-backed recommendations on the ones their kids have slept soundly on.

How we chose the best toddler mattresses

Before I looked at the toddler mattresses on the market, I needed to understand what features were most important in a toddler mattress, especially when it comes to safe sleep guidance for toddlers. I spoke to Carolynne J. Harvey, a certified sleep consultant and founder of Dream Baby Sleep, to learn more about what to prioritize in a toddler mattress and what to avoid. I also referred to guidelines set out by the AAP, Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) on toddler sleep and buying mattresses for toddlers.

Then, I turned to parents in the What to Expect community to find out what their favorite mattress brands and mattress models are, and which their kids actually like sleeping on. Using their feedback, I narrowed down my list to the eight best toddler mattresses that received rave reviews for being durable and long-lasting, worth their price tags and comfortable to snuggle on (those big kids might be asking for some side-by-side cuddles if there’s room for you to climb in!).

Why We Love It

Newton is a go-to mattress brand for many What to Expect community members. In fact, the Newton Crib Mattress was voted our readers’ favorite in the 2024 What to Expect Sleep Awards. Parents praise this dual-sided crib and toddler mattress for providing a comfortable sleep surface for their kids, with a firm side for infants and a softer side for toddlers.

Made with Newton’s special Breathe-Thru Technology, parents also love the amazing air circulation, with many What to Expect community members attesting to the breathable design, saying they’ve actually "shoved their face into the mattress" to see if they could breathe through — and they could! (A reminder: According to the AAP, children under 1 should always be placed on their back to sleep.) This air flow system also helps to keep your toddler cool, which is great for summertime or kids who run warm.

Parents also appreciate that this mattress is also completely washable, making it an appealing feature for parents in the throes of potty training: Simply throw the cover in the washing machine and hose down the mattress in the bath or shower. Keep in mind, though, that the Original Newton Mattress is not waterproof, so a particularly major accident might be a problem. It is, however, water-resistant and Newton does sell a waterproof toddler mattress for $350, or you can get a waterproof cover for $100.

  • "I got it and it helps me sleep easy knowing my son is sleeping on it. My husband tested it out by smashing his own face into the mattress to see if he could breathe still and he could!"

  • "We have it and love it! Love having that piece of mind."

At under $100, the Sealy Brilliant Nights mattress provides plenty of support and comfort at a more affordable price point. And because it transitions from crib to toddler bed, your dollar will go even further. Although it’s meant for babies and toddlers, it’s designed like adult mattresses: There’s a secure edge border wire to help keep the coils in place for more stability, and additional support on the corners and edges.

Parents appreciate that the waterproof mattress has a cover that wipes clean, making it easier to handle small middle-of-the-night accidents. Like many crib mattresses, this one is dual-sided with a softer side for toddlers. But with a coil count of 204, it’s still quite a firm mattress (the higher the coil count, the firmer the mattress). If your toddler has expressed a preference towards a softer surface, this may not be the mattress for them.

Why We Love It

If your child is transitioning from the crib right to a “big kid bed,” this Amazon Basics memory foam mattress is supportive and comfortable on growing little bodies, but not as heavy as an innerspring mattress. It’s also quieter than an innerspring mattress — aka no creaking as your kiddo tosses and turns at night. And parents love that if they cuddle up next to their little ones, it’s supportive on their backs, too. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s affordable, which means it may not be as much of a pain if the mattress doesn’t make it past potty training.

What’s also nice about transitioning right to a big kid bed and mattress is that you can get a thicker — and likely more comfortable — option for your tot (crib and toddler mattresses are never thicker than 6 inches). You can customize the size and thickness of this bed, ranging from 6 to 12 inches in twin, full, queen and king sizes, which is a nice perk for older toddlers or deeper-set bed frames.

It’s worth noting that it’s a pretty firm mattress as far as memory foam goes, which is not everyone’s preference (although firmness isn’t a bad thing for very young kids). And it’s not waterproof, but as with all regular-sized mattresses, you can buy a waterproof cover

One option if you’re ready to ditch the crib but don’t have a convertible toddler bed is to try a floor bed. This is exactly what it sounds like — a toddler bed on the floor — and the point is that if you’re worried about your kiddo falling out of a traditional bed, they’re safe and comfy on or close to the floor.

The Sweetnight Memory Foam mattress hits everything we look for in a floor mattress. For starters, parents tend to opt for full-size mattresses (or larger) when doing a floor bed, because a twin doesn’t offer quite as much room to flop around. Additionally, parents look for firmer mattresses for floor beds, because you don’t have the support of a traditional bed frame or box spring. The Sweetnight mattress has a firm side that’s great for floor beds, and it flips over to a softer side if you choose to put it in a frame later. It’s not terribly expensive as far as adult-sized mattresses go, and the ability to flip it over allows for more longevity that helps increase the value, too.

Because it’s a memory foam mattress, it’ll be quiet even if your toddler tosses and turns at night, which is important if they’re above or near another sleeper.

The downsides are that it’s not waterproof, and it’s pretty heavy (51.3 pounds!) due to the multiple layers of foam. But because it will be on the floor, you won’t have to lift it much (or at all) to change sheets. And again, you can always pick up a waterproof cover.

For a highly-rated organic mattress, check out the Avocado Organic Crib Mattress is made with just a few materials, including GOTS-certified organic wool and cotton, with an interior of coconut husk fiber infused with Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) certified organic latex. However, this mattress not only bears tons of certifications, but it also is beloved by parents for its longevity and comfort. The infant side is firm “but still soft,” according to one parent, while the other side is much softer and more plush. Parents report that of the many dual-sided crib mattresses, the toddler side on the Avocado mattress is surprisingly lush and comfortable, meaning your kid will love sleeping on it for as long as they fit on it, which will make the $440 price tag feel more worth it. Some parents say that they liked the feel so much for their toddlers, they bought a regular-sized Avocado mattress for themselves!

There are a few downsides, however. For one, this mattress is pricey. But because you can use it from the newborn stage through toddlerhood, it may be worth the investment. The other potential issue is the mattress’s weight: At 28 pounds, it’s heavier than most traditional dual-sided crib mattresses, and for constant sheet-changing, that can be tough. It’s also not waterproof, though the brand sells a waterproof cover for $69.

  • "I ordered an avocado mattress and it is perfect! Firm, but still soft on the infant side, and extra soft on the toddler side. I also have an avocado mattress for myself and I love it."

  • "We bought the avocado mattress. It was $350 but has an infant side and a toddler side- the infant side being more firm and the toddler side being less so for developmental and safety purposes."

Why We Love It

Choosing a mattress for a twin bed aka big kid bed? Look no further. This dual-sided hybrid of foam/innerspring is the ultimate crowd pleaser, especially if you’re shopping for a kid who’s too young to express comfort preferences. One side is designed for kids ages 3 to 7, and is firmer (particularly in the center), which Saatva says helps with spinal alignment for this age group. The other side, made for older kids, is cushier, but still has that extra padding in the center to help support growing spines.

Although this mattress expensive, you get a lot of bang for your buck: Not only do you get a two-sided mattress designed to last a decade or more, you also get a built-in water-resistant organic cotton cover (it’s not quite the same as waterproof, but it does protect against spills and accidents without needing to buy an additional layer, which is not the case for many twin mattresses). And, it offers the durability of an innerspring mattress with the comfort of foam, so it’s the best of both worlds.

Both sides are breathable — great for kids who run hot — and the mattress is treated with an antimicrobial finish that protects from mildew, bacteria and mold (further proof that this mattress really is built to last). Parents report easy delivery service, and that their kids are often instantly happier sleeping on this mattress after transitioning out of the crib.

  • "I bought a saatva youth mattress…I believe it was around $700 with an internet coupon…BUT…it’s flippable. One side is 3-7 years and the other is 8-12. More bang for your buck!"

  • "I just did a TON of research on this because we’re moving our little dude from a toddler bed to a twin bed. The Saatva youth bed had the best reviews and they are both double sided, firm for young kids and softer for older kids."

If you’re looking to upgrade your toddler to a full-size mattress that will last them throughout adolescence, the Happsy mattress is an excellent choice that parents describe this as having "luxury quality" while being "very comfortable." It comes in both medium-firm and plush options, although it might be best to opt for the firmer one, as Harvey explains that erring on the side of firmness tends to be safer. You can also purchase a comfy mattress topper from them for when your child gets older.

If organic materials are important to you, you’ll be glad to hear that this Greenguard Gold-certified mattress is made with GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool, GOLS-certified organic latex, and steel coils that are wrapped with fabric and assembled without glues or adhesives.

Although this pricey pick is not waterproof and it’s heavy, these are features that won’t matter down the line as your child grows up. So, it might be worth it to invest if you’re planning on using this mattress throughout childhood.

  • "We bit the bullet and bought a full size plush mattress to last our son longer by Happsy (owned by naturepedic). The mattress is comfortable, so I’m glad I went plush vs medium firm and my son seems to love it."

Any family that travels a lot or visits grandparents often may want to invest in an inflatable toddler bed. The Hiccapop travel bed is a convenient and comfortable option, including everything you need to inflate and deflate the bed. The mattress itself nestles inside an inflated bumper system that provides protection on all four sides for toddlers who toss and turn at night. Everything fits inside the included carrying case, too, which makes it easy to pack and travel with.

Parents also love that the mattress fits standard crib sheets and that you can hand-wash it (while it’s not billed as waterproof, it is vinyl, so it’s easy to wipe down). It’s also surprisingly comfortable, and with a weight limit of 310 pounds, parents can snuggle up next to their kids (and they say that it’s actually pretty nice to lie down on!).

Parents like that it’s easy to use — the inflation system plugs in and inflates or deflates the mattress automatically — but over time, some parents say they noticed a slow leaking of air. However, the mattress comes with a lifetime guarantee, and parents report that it’s honored if you have issues with yours.

  • "my parents have this for my son, a sheet fits on it too. He's used it for 2 years every time he's at their house and really likes it. he's probably around 45 inches tall and is starting to get too big for it, but it's been great."

  • "We bought an inflatable travel bed for a trip we were going on when our daughter about 19 months old. We stared using it at home a few weeks before the tip to get her used to it and OMG she absolutely LOVED it. It’s actually how she transitioned out of her crib - she loved it so much she refused to sleep in her crib anymore (totally not planned but was a bonus lol). We used it for about 5 months as her regular bed (since she refused her crib) and took it on all our trips. I highly recommend it. The quality was great, it was really comfy (I slept on it with her multiple times lol), and easy to travel with."

What to look for in a toddler mattress

Because there aren’t as many safety guidelines to follow when it comes to toddler sleep, there is more to consider in a toddler mattress than just the firm, flat surface of a crib mattress. When deciding what mattress is best for you and your child, here are some of the most important features to consider:

  • Size: Mattresses for toddler beds are made to conform to crib measurements, as a toddler bed frame is usually a converted crib frame. They should be 51 ¼ inches long by 27 ¼ inches wide, and less than 6 inches thick, and you should not be able to fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the side of the bed frame. If your toddler is sleeping in a twin bed, those measurements are typically 75 inches long and 38 inches wide, and a full mattress will be 75 inches long by 53 inches wide. The weight of the mattress is also important to think about: Your child will probably have accidents in this bed, so you’ll want the ability to easily lift the mattress to change the sheets.
  • Certifications: Toddler mattresses can hold a few common certifications based on the materials and processes used to make them. A Greenguard Gold certification signifies that the materials used give off low or no emissions of potentially harmful chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It’s worth noting that a mattress can be Greenguard-certified without being Gold-certified — Gold-stamped products are on the lowest end of emissions and> give off a minimal amount of formaldehyde. For mattresses with foam components, CertiPUR-US certification signifies the foams are free of heavy metals, formaldehyde, phthalates and more. For mattresses with fabric covers, they can also be certified organic materials by the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). To be GOTS-certified organic cotton, the material must contain a minimum of 70 percent organic fibers. Other certifications to consider include CPSIA-certified, which means it meets standards set out by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008. I made sure each mattress on our list carries at least one of these certifications (and ideally, more than one!), which may be an approach you want to take while mattress shopping, too.
  • Price: If you’re getting a mattress specifically for a toddler bed, you may want to spend less as you will only use it for a couple of years, versus if you are getting a twin or full bed and your child might be on for closer to 10 years, you may want to spend a little more. If certain features like organic materials are most important to you, however, you may be willing to spend more money on a toddler mattress.
  • Comfort: Crib mattresses for newborns need to be firm for safety, but it’s worth ensuring that your toddler is on a comfortable sleep surface. What "comfortable means will vary from child to child, of course, but looking at feedback from online reviews and from parents in the What to Expect community can help you decide on a mattress that others said was comfortable for their child.
  • Waterproofing: If you’re using the mattress in a toddler bed, your child may still be sleeping on it when they begin to potty train overnight — and therefore have accidents. Looking for a vinyl-coated mattress may make sense, or at least invest in a good waterproof cover.

Best Toddler Mattresses FAQs

There isn’t exactly a "best" type of mattress for toddlers because it’s largely up to personal preference. If you ask What to Expect community members, however, they would say the best toddler mattress is the Newton Baby Original Crib Mattress because of its high-quality materials, long-lasting design and ease of care.

Ultimately, however, Harvet says, "if they are in a crib or toddler bed, the 'toddler' side of most dual-sided mattresses is perfect." Instead of a toddler mattress, you can also look for a twin or even full mattress if you want to upgrade them to a big kid bed right away.

After baby turns 1, you don’t have to worry about them sleeping on a firm, flat surface. "Even though you can flip to the toddler side of a crib mattress at age 1, you’ll still notice that these 'softer' sides are pretty firm," Harvey says. While there’s no big safety concern in using the softer side after they turn 1, overall, Harvey says it’s best to "err on the firmer side."

"This is really up to the parents," Harvey says. "It’s hard to say if one is better; there are pluses and minuses to both." Foam mattresses are lightweight and cost less, she says, but they don’t last as long and they can mold if they get wet. She adds that innerspring mattresses are more durable, but they weigh and cost more.
