When you’re pregnant, you expect that your body will undergo changes: namely, watching your bump grow throughout the trimesters. But some changes may surprise you, such as one body part that, as an adult, rarely fluctuates in size: your feet.
“Pregnancy usually results in weight gain, which is normal, but this can cause problems with your feet,” says Ashley Lee, D.P.M., a foot and ankle reconstructive surgeon. That's because you’re experiencing increased weight on your feet, as well as swelling in your feet and ankles due to your body increasing its water content during pregnancy. Which is where products like compression socks come in handy — but they won't remedy all of your pregnancy foot-related pains.
In fact, at the same time that you're experiencing swelling, the ligaments and tendons in your feet are also going through changes. “During pregnancy, it's common for these ligaments and tendons to relax, causing the feet to ‘expand,’” says Dr. Lee. That might also make your arches flatten and cause your shoes to feel a little tight.
Because your feet may feel different before (and even after!) baby arrives, buying shoes for pregnancy is one way to make yourself feel a little more comfortable.
How we chose the best shoes for pregnancy
There are a dizzying number of shoes on the market, and pretty much all of them claim to be comfortable! In order to narrow down the options, we sought advice from two podiatrists — Ashley Lee, D.P.M., a foot and ankle reconstructive surgeon in Hinsdale, Illinois; and Emily Splichal, D.P.M., a podiatrist based in New York City — who we spoke with to learn about what features are most important to have in a pregnancy-friendly shoe, such as arch support and cushioned inserts. We also referenced the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Seal of Acceptance Program, which awards a seal to products that promote good foot health. (Many of the shoes selected for this list have received that award!)
But you won’t know how comfortable a pregnancy shoe is until you’ve walked a mile in it. So we spoke to moms on our editorial team and those in the What to Expect community about their own experience with shoes during pregnancy: which ones they found most comfortable, most supportive, and most likely to wear once their pregnancy is over.
