Your bank account certainly takes a hit once you have a baby — the diapers alone will cost you around $500 in the first year — which is why Walmart’s famous “everyday low prices” make their baby registry extra tempting. Walmart’s large selection of products, easy-to-use app and price matching guarantee make it a baby registry contender for all your baby gear needs. (And if you're interested in personalized recommendations for what to put on your registries — as well as where to register — check out What to Expect's Baby Registry Builder.)

The benefits of a Walmart baby registry

Welcome Box: Walmart offers a free welcome box (valued at about $40) that includes baby-related product samples. The samples vary from box to box, but you can expect items like a small bottle of lotion, a pacifier, a sample diaper, coupons and more.

Walmart app: Create your registry, and add products directly from your phone using Walmart’s app.

Price matching: Walmart will match a competitor’s online price for the same product. Note: You can only use this discount on one product per day.

Free returns: Return a gift on your registry within 90 days to get a gift card equal to the item’s value. There are some items eligible for one-year returns, too.

How to create a Walmart baby registry

Walmart’s site doesn’t put the baby registry front and center, but it’s not hard to find once you do a little digging. If you go to the drop-down menu on the left of your screen, there’s a button for “Registry.” Once there, you can select "Baby" and then create your registry by putting in some basic information. Just provide a username, password, due date and shipping address to start adding products.

You can also register through Walmart’s app. Download it — it’s free! — and go to “Services” in the toolbar at the bottom of the app. You’ll see a “Baby Registry” category, and then you’ll get the option to create your own. You need to type in the same information as the site — name, due date, address, etc. — to create a new account.

Using your Walmart baby registry

We created a baby registry both on the app and the site just to get two different experiences. If you choose Walmart for your registry, we suggest that you create one account and use both the app and the site for convenience. The site offers a “Tips & Ideas” tab with guides to buying the best products for you and your baby. We love these helpful product lists because they allowed us to browse best sellers and age-appropriate products when we didn’t know where to start.

The site also has a checklist that gives moms a basic idea of what to buy for baby’s first year. There are product suggestions for bathing, feeding, clothing, entertaining and more. Many registries offer a checklist, but Walmart’s was much less overwhelming than others we’ve tried out before.

The app doesn’t have the inspiration tab or the checklist, but it categorizes your registry items (Feeding, Baby activities & gear and so on). That being said, it’s still great to use as a companion to the site or all on its own if you want to add products anytime, anywhere. Why not shop when you have pregnancy insomnia?

How to return a gift

Walmart has free 90-day returns. If you receive something from your registry that you don’t need or want, then head to your local Walmart location to return the gift in person. You also can return the item for free by mail or via a scheduled pickup from home. Bring the packing slip or the gift receipt to get your return accepted. If you don’t have a receipt, you need to know the order number or the sender’s email address (if the gift came from Walmart.com). There are some registry items that are eligible for one-year returns.

Pros

  • The app lets you add products no matter where you are
  • Walmart has a free welcome box
  • You can price match to get savings

Cons

  • No price matching for competitors’ in-store prices
  • Price matching is limited to one product per day
  • You need receipts for easy returns

Our review

Walmart has a huge variety of products both online and in stores. Plus, the brand operates more than 4,500 stores across the country, which makes a Walmart baby registry convenient if you and your friends and family have one close by. The benefits — like a free welcome box and price matching — add to your savings even more.

But while it may offer low prices, but we’re not sure Walmart makes up for the lack of a completion discount (which saves moms hundreds of dollars if they time it right). Then, there’s the return policy. If you don’t have a gift receipt, packing slip, order number or your gifter’s email address, navigating a return can be more difficult.
